“Democracy is not a regime of unanimity, but of tolerance”

As the key element for the existence of the democracy His Excellence Xavier de Cabanes specified the tolerance.  It is precisely the acceptance of different opinions, interests and values that construct the freedom we live in today.

In the beginning of the week I had the pleasure to attend a lecture held by the French ambassador – His Excellency Xavier Lapeyre de Cabanes in the University of Sofia “Sv. Kliment Ohridski” where he was invited to speak on the subject – France in front of the migration crisis. For nearly 2 hours Xavier de Cabanes managed to address many aspects of the problem remaining comprehensive and satisfying the student’s curiosity.

The essence of the lecture was France, its view on the migrants, the country’s priorities regarding their politics in Syria.
Categorically – this was the ambassador’s opinion- there is no simple or fast solution to the problems in Syria and Iraq. Even if the western countries find a solution to the political crisis, the consequences of the catastrophe we are witnessing are going to last awhile. Therefore the political subjects have to elaborate a united approach for handling the migration wave so we can find a way to use it for developing the societies and cultures on the our continent.

His Excellency emphasized on the importance of a strong coalition that can work together toward solving the problems in the Middle East. Despite the difference in the country’s interests they have to find an effective solution to the conflicts in the region.
The subject, His Excellency pointed out was the democracy such as we know it in Europe, the trust we vote it and the values it represents. As the key elements for its existence he specified the tolerance.  It is precisely the acceptance of different opinions, interests and values that construct the freedom we live in today. The democracy is not a regime of unanimity and it’s impossible that it continues to function properly if we condemn the differences and the disagreements in the world we live in.

The students could also ask their questions. Some made comments on the subject; others were interested in the personal position of Xavier de Cabanes. At the end of his lecture the ambassador was applauded by everyone not only for his comprehensiveness and attention but also for making the gesture to speak through his entire lecture in Bulgarian.
